1. Look to artists in your community. I think almost everyone knows SOMEONE who produces artwork for a living (or maybe even a hobby or side-hustle)! Do you have a friend from school that is an artist? A neighbor? A co-worker? I think it’s always great to support the people you’re surrounded by.
By supporting the people in your personal community, you have something more unique, more personal, and more valuable than anything you would be able to find in a big-box store. There’s nothing wrong with purchasing artwork from somewhere like Walmart or Target, but if you want something unique and special for your home, I would definitely recommend going to people that you know.
2. Social Media. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love following artists on Instagram! They provide so much inspiration, and I always love to see what they’re working on. Don’t have any artists that come to mind online? Some of my favorites are Rebecca Hunter, Brittany Smith, and Emily Jeffords.
3. Minted. I LOVE Minted! Minted is an online store where real artists can submit and sell their work for commission. Each piece that you purchase from Minted comes with a letter from the artist to tell you about the piece. Even though Minted is an online retailer, it still feels like a very personal experience.
Minted also offers beautiful, modern, custom framing and mats, which I love. A lot of times when purchasing fine art, you do have to personally find your framing and mats, so I love having the option to have everything done through one source.
4. Thrifting. I love going into thrift stores to look for art. There are always pieces that people walk right by without a second thought that can be used in such unique ways! Thrifted pieces can also add SO much character to the home.
In addition to finding artwork at thrift shops, I also love finding frames! I really love the look of vintage frames, and they always have a ton of character when they’re sourced from thrift shops. eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Etsy are also great for purchasing frames!
5. Make your own! You don’t have to be the most talented and creative person in the world in order to make your own artwork. One thing I would really love to do in our home is use my son, Mason’s, artwork. I think it would be so cute to cut out pieces of his scribbles, mat them, and then frame them on the wall. Another cool idea would be to cut pieces of old rugs to frame. I have so many old, vintage rugs that I’m not using and I think they would look so great hung up on the wall in a frame. You can also use photos from traveling! There are so many creative ways to create your own artwork inside your home.
I hope these tips make your art-purchasing process a little bit easier! And I’m thinking while writing this post I realized you might like to see a post with tips and tricks on how to actually style all of this artwork in your home. Is that something you guys would be interested in?? Let me know!
