Summer is officially in full swing! If you’re anything like me, you’re likely planning your next family beach vacation. Whether it’s swimming in the shimmering waves, building sand castles, cloud gazing, or searching for the perfect seashell, it’s sure to be a sweet childhood memory of summer’s past!

This week I’m bringing seaside inspiration indoors. This Modern Coastal Kids Bedroom design will have your kids dreaming of tranquil ocean waves and walks on the beach, as they drift off to sleep!

Kids’ bedroom designs should be cozy and inviting but also functional, having the ability to evolve with a child as they grow. Our goal is to create a calming, quiet space, that encourages relaxation but still offers room to foster your child’s imagination and creativity.

To achieve a “coastal” look, I’m using soft tones and calming colors, while sprinkling in hints of blue to add warmth and texture. The layered blues, creamy whites, patterns and casual furnishings are sure to create the breeziness of the beach. What kid wouldn’t love for it to feel like a summer beach retreat year-round!

Modern beds

When thinking about the overall layout of the room you’ll want to start with staple pieces first and then build out the décor and accessories. Use room measurements as a starting point, before selecting furnishings, to ensure you have adequate space.

I love the old saying “Always buy a good pair of shoes and a bed – if you’re not in one you’re in the other.”! Our kids spend a lot of time tucked into bed, so it’s important to invest in something that will last. We can extend the overall life of the bed by sticking with a neutral frame. This creates versatility and will allow for easy design changes over time.

Metal frame options like THIS Sutherland Twin Bed from McGhee & CO. are a great choice. They practically go with everything and offer a simple modern aesthetic. This raised bed also allows for hidden storage underneath, depending on the type of bedding you chose and the length of your comforter.

Modern Coastal Dressers

Both functionality and design are important when choosing a kids’ dresser. Think about the overall space of the room and the relative size of surrounding furniture. Be sure to measure the space where the dresser will go, this will help determine what will fit your needs.

You’ll also want to consider what items you’ll be storing in the dresser. Will it be used for clothing only or do you need space for extra toy management, helping to tame the clutter!?!

THIS 6-drawer dresser from Crate & Kids adds a modern design touch to our coastal theme. It boasts clean and simple lines with an added splash of detailing in the metal hardware. The dreamy matte finish adds a burst of color and will instantly take you beachside!

Kids coastal artwork

Adding playful art to our Modern Kids Coastal Bedroom is the perfect way to personalize this space, while still keeping with the overall theme of the room. With so many fun design options, it’s sure to spark any child’s imagination!

How cute is THIS Octopus Silhouette from McGhee & CO! Besides the obvious adorable factor, it really adds character to the room and creates a sense of movement.

Original art can be pricey! Printable options from Etsy are a great affordable way to still include artwork in your space. With a quick trip to your local FedEx and less than $10, printable art has never been easier or more budget-friendly! Be sure to check out my amazing Etsy and Target finds that won’t break the bank!

Kids lighting

Lighting is a great way to add style and warmth to your space, so don’t be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone! Experiment with natural influences like rattan, wicker, shells, and even earthy woods, to create a relaxed touch.

I’ve put together a few of my favorites, like THIS Rattan Ceiling Light from Crate & Kids. I love the basket-style weaved detail and the texture it brings to the room. If you stare at it long enough you might even see the golden haze of an ocean sunset! Okay okay…I’m kidding on that last part!

I hope this Modern Coastal Kids Bedroom embodies your child’s love for the coast and has them daydreaming about their next beachside adventure!
