I’ve been living on Pinterest this week…here’s why: I’m so inspired by outdoor living spaces and I can’t seem to stop dreaming of our future at home garden. I love the idea of growing our own food because I grew up always having a fresh garden right in my backyard.
It was never a huge garden, just enough for our family of four to enjoy. And my grandparents on both sides also grew their own food as well. From vegetable gardens in Tennessee, to fruit trees in Sicily, it’s in my blood to have to have this desire. The problem is, the green thumb was unfortunately NOT passed down to me.
So even though we had plans to start this year, I think I need a little more time to plan it out perfectly! And the more I’m planning it out, I’m realizing there are really three categories I’d love to have!
At Home Fruit Trees
First is fruit trees! I would love to have at least one fig tree! The taste of them brings me back to my childhood, eating them freshly picked from our backyard. My Nonno used to dry his own, and even though I thought it was so strange that he always had a grocery bag full of them, I also remember eating them like they were candy!
I’d also love to have lemons! And since I’m waiting to start the garden, I decided to go ahead and buy a lemon tree! To say I’m excited is an understatement!! And side note, fruit trees make great gifts (for anyone with the space for them). I surprised Kelly, our Junior Designer, with one for her work anniversary and she was just as excited as me!
At Home Garden Vegetables
Next is obvious, vegetables! Two staple vegetables I would love to grow are tomatoes & zucchini. We are always cooking with fresh tomatoes whether it’s on top of salads, fresh pasta or bruschetta, or homemade guacamole!
And zucchini is probably my favorite summer vegetable of all! I love to sauté them with sweet onions in olive oil, a little sea salt, and Italian seasoning.. my mouth is watering just thinking about it!
I also love roasting all of my summer vegetables together for the easiest summer side dish! How great would it be to be able to just step outside and grab the ingredients I needed!
At Home Herb Garden
Lastly are herbs! And I’m thinking I may not need to wait for this since they do great in a pot! I would love to grow basil, oregano, parsley, mint, and rosemary! They can be added to so many different recipes.
Fresh herbs and a little acid (like lemon juice or vinegar) are the perfect combinations to make a dish come to life! I love using fresh basil in my Mediterranean pasta salad, fresh mint in a berry fruit salad or cocktail, and rosemary is great for roasted red potatoes!
I can’t wait to continue my list as time goes on and make a concrete plan for our at home garden next year! Until then, I’ll continue scrolling Pinterest for inspiration and shop for local produce whenever possible! Keep following along on Instagram & Pinterest for more Spring and Summer inspiration!
